in Indonesia

From wild volcanic landscapes to colourful, crowded cities,  there are so many incredible filming locations in Indonesia. Of course, with thousands of islands to choose from as prime filming spots, you might not know where to start looking! Don’t worry, we’ll help! Your location scout will work with your production coordinator in Indonesia and a journalist fixer if needed, to develop focused briefs for potential locations. But if you want a head start, check out some of our favourite spots.

Java

Java is the most populated of all Indonesia’s islands; Over 50% of the country’s population living here. Yet, beyond the colourful, thronged cities, much of the island remains rural. This makes it one of the most diverse filming locations in Indonesia. Your location scout can check out traditional villages with their fields of rice paddies, the lush green landscape around the country’s most active volcano, Mount Bromo, and, of course, the stunning Borobudur Temple, one of the world’s largest Buddhist monuments.

Jakarta

If looking for busy city scenes then check out the sprawling Jakarta. With its gleaming skyscrapers and busy shopping streets, it’s the most modern of all filming locations in Indonesia. Location scouting here will introduce you to a mosaic of fascinating cultures from Javanese, Malay, and Chinese to Arab, Indian and Dutch. These influences are obvious in the architecture but also in the delicious Jakartan cuisine. Your production coordinator can organize film permits for some of the city’s best restaurants and street food markets.

Bali

The western-located island of Bali is beloved by tourists. But for our purposes, it’s also one of the most spectacular filming locations in Indonesia. Perfect filming sets include the south coast’s splendid beaches, Uluwatu’s striking cliffs and the sacred temple of Tanah Lot. The temple is situated on a tiny craggy rock, surrounded by venomous sea snakes believed to be the temple’s protectors. If you’re interested in filming this and the other six sea temples, our journalist fixer can fill you in on the history of these wondrous locations.

Surabaya

For another urban filming location in Indonesia, Surabaya on the northeastern side of Java is a busy industrial city built around a port. You’ll find another broad mix of cultures here, including a lively Arab quarter where the stunning 15th-century Ampel Mosque, a famed Chinatown, and remnants of its colonial Dutch past in buildings like the 19th-century House of Sampoerna. During location scouting, don’t miss the Tugu Pahlawan (Heroes Monument), a 41.5-meter-high tribute to the Battle of Surabaya, a key event in Indonesia’s war of independence.

Sumatra

There are several small cities in Sumatra, but the island is best known for mesmerising  wilderness. This includes dense rainforests, majestic mountains and volcanos, not to mention Lake Toba, the world’s largest volcanic lake. Several dreamy and secluded beaches will also prove perfect if location scouting for more wild, natural-looking shores. While filming here is not a problem the island does experience power outages. However, your production coordinator in Indonesia can organise a generator for the film set if needed.
